Heart-shaped sandwiches for your picnic on Valentine's Day

Heart-shaped sandwiches for your picnic on Valentine's Day

These appetizing, and savoury heart-shaped sandwiches only take about 10 to 15 minutes preparation time, but look like little pieces of art. Last week I wanted to find out if they would also be picnic suitable, especially for romantic occasions like Valentine’s Day. From preparing them at home, to transport, to serving them on-site. And yes, it works! Below you’ll find the recipe and my preparation tips.

Romantic Picnic Sandwich

Since these cute sandwiches are not very large, I usually plan 2 sandwiches per person. In this example I used sourdough bread and oregano, but this can be exchanged by any other sliceable, not too fluffy bread and any green leafy herb that excites your tastebuds, like basil, marjoram, or sage.

Ingredients for 4 sandwiches

2 slices of bread

2 tablespoons of cream cheese (plain or seasoned, as you like it)

Your favourite herbs

4 Cherry Tomatoes

Tools

Cutting board

Tablespoon

Bowls

A sharp knife

Heart-shaped cookie cutter

Instructions

  1. Prepare your tomato hearts: Cut your cherry tomatoes into halves, then cut those halves diagonally. This will lead to pieces that are shaped like half a heart. Put the pieces together to create a full heart.
  2. Spread about one tablespoon of cream cheese evenly on each slice of bread.
  3. Take the cookie cutter and cut 2 hearts out of your bread slices.
  4. Decorate your heart-shaped sandwiches, each with one tomato heart and some aromatic leaves from your herbs.

    Picnic suggestions

If you want to serve these alluring sandwiches at a picnic, transport the ready-cut tomatoes in one container, your herbs and bread in another. Put the sandwiches together cheese-on-cheese during transport. If your cream cheese is very sticky you might consider putting a separator, like waxed paper, in between the slices. Remember to pack a knife (to even out little damages in transit) and a serving board or plate.
